Parent Guide
What to Wear to Dance Class
A simple, stress-free guide to what your child should wear to their first dance class — and how to feel prepared without overthinking it.
You don’t need the perfect outfit to start.
Most parents worry about getting everything “right” before the first class. The truth is, your child just needs to feel comfortable, confident, and ready to move.
Getting Started
Keep it simple, comfortable, and easy to move in
For a first dance class, your child does not need a full dance wardrobe. The goal is to wear something that allows them to move comfortably and feel confident in class.
Once your child settles in and continues, you can gradually move toward more specific classwear.
By Dance Style
What to wear for each type of class
Ballet
Ballet is more structured, so clothing is typically more fitted and traditional.
- Leotard
- Tights
- Ballet slippers
- Hair secured back (often in a bun)
Jazz
Jazz allows for more flexibility, but clothing should still be easy to move in.
- Fitted top or dancewear
- Leggings or shorts
- Jazz shoes
- Hair pulled back
Acrobatics
Acro requires flexibility and strength, so clothing should allow full movement.
- Athletic wear or leotard
- Fitted shorts or leggings
- Barefoot or acro shoes (depending on class)
- Hair secured back
Hip Hop
Hip hop is more relaxed, but still requires safe, comfortable movement.
- Comfortable activewear
- Joggers or athletic clothing
- Indoor sneakers
- Hair secured if needed
You don’t need everything on day one
Many families start with simple, comfortable options and build from there.
The most important thing is that your child feels ready to participate — not that everything looks perfect.
